I love Arts and Activities Magazine. When I first started teaching, I was enamored with the photographs of student artwork. When I taught in the regular classroom, I always tried to find ways to use the projects from the magazine in my regular teaching. I would often integrate another subject area with the visual art projects I found there. I serve as a Contributing Editor now and have a column called Art is at the Core. It is about arts integration. I offer ideas for integrating the work of featured artists into the regular curriculum.
Today, I thought I’d share the Art is at the Core about Jesus Morales.
I loved Gus Morales. He’s an amazing artist who was a strong voice for arts education. He passed away in 2015 after a car accident.
Here is a video from the PBS Series Amazing Art Adventures where Morales talks about texture. My students love this video!

Also, I had the privilege to see one of his works in real life at the Sculpture Garden at the New Orleans Museum of Art. I’ll share my photograph of that work with you. Feel free to show your students if you teach about him.
What do you think of Jesus Morales? Have you ever seen his work in real life?
